Most people have seen a magician perform on TV or on a stage but not everyone has seen a Close-up Magician perform so they don’t always know what to expect. I thought I’d explain what types of tricks I perform as a Close-up Magician. Card Tricks When I first became interested in magic I was obsessed with card tricks, I’d see video footage of legends of magic performing miracles with just a deck of cards and I wanted to do the same. I took great pleasure in learning method after method and dedicating hours to practicing the correct technique. Photo by the amazing Fossca Photography - www.fossca.co.uk However, when I started to perform for people I quickly realised that I needed more variety. Over the years I have learnt over 100 card tricks but only ever perform a few when I work, and all of them have to be very different to a each other. Money Tricks Some of my most popular routines include money, coins and bank notes. Money is great to use to perform miracles with because people are so familiar with it and use it everyday. Tricks With A Variety of Familiar Objects In my opinion the astonishment people feel when experiencing magic is strongly related to how familiar they are with the object being used. Recently I have learnt routines using elastic bands, pots of jam, padlocks, rings and even polo mints! Rubik Cube Magic For Christmas I bought myself a Rubik Cube (I buy the worst presents!) I quickly became obsessed with learning to solve the cube and, more importantly, how to perform magic with it. Mentalism More recently I’ve been learning some mentalism (Derren Brown type stuff). As much as I love sleight of hand magic, I enjoy the connection with the audience that you can get from performing these types of routines. As you can see Close-up magicians don’t just perform card tricks, and I love taking everyday objects people are familiar with and doing something amazing and unexpected with them.
